Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

KENAI - Juneau-Douglas edged Colony by just one point to win the girls' team title at the Skyview Invitational track and field meet in Kenai on Saturday.
The Crimson Bears finished with 73 total points, narrowly beating the Knights' 72.
Senior Hallie Huggins led the Knights with four first-place finishes. Huggins won two individual events, the 100-meter and the 100 hurdles, and was part of a pair of first-place relay teams. Huggins, Trish Tourborg, Allie Grazulis and Adrienne Everett won the 800 relay, while Huggins, Everett, Grazulis and Ellen VanGorder finished first in the 1,600 relay.
Everett added a third-place finish in the 400, and Grazulis finished fourth in the high jump.
Wasilla finished seventh with 45.75 total points.
The Warriors were led by a first-place effort from their 3,200 relay team. Ema Olson, Suzanna Caldwell, Samantha Lewis and Jessica Gross combined for a time of 10 minutes and 40 seconds.
Caldwell, a senior, also finished second in the 800 and sixth in the 3,200.
Palmer was 14th with 6.75 points.
Rosanna Lincecum led the Moose with a fourth-place finish in the high jump.
The Moose were the top Valley finisher in the boys' team standings, with 63 points.
Junior Frank Marden finished with a first-place tie in the high jump. He was one of four athletes, a group that included Colony's Christopher Krieg, to hit 5-foot-10.
Palmer's team of Nick Stahler, Ryan Harrington, Devin Konkler and Jake Heun won the 400 relay. Konkler, a sophomore, was also second in the 100 and third in the 200.
Senior Jeremy Weber was third in the 300 hurdles.
Colony finished fifth in the team standings with 54.5 points.
Senior David Registe led the Knights with a first-place finish in the 200.
Houston placed 13th in the team standings with six points.
This weekend, the local track squads are at Palmer High School for the annual Palmer Relays. Action starts at 3 p.m. on Friday.
