Prep volleyball: Moose net win over Knights

PALMER — After scoring a whopping 25-8 win in the second game of the match, the Colony Knights could have taken any momentum the Palmer Moose had and simply run away with it.

But Palmer regrouped and scored a 3-1 (25-23, 8-25, 25-21, 25-20) win over its crosstown rivals at Colony High School on Tuesday.

“To come back and get after it and play hard to take that third game was definitely key,” Palmer head coach Steve Reynolds said. “If the match would have gone five games, who knows?”

Colony senior Hannah Curtis posted a match-high 22 kills and 16 digs, and was particularly strong in that second game.

“Hannah Curtis had our way with us,” Reynolds said. “They just set it to her and it was point, point, point.”

While Curtis was central to the Knights’ win in the second game, Reynolds credited his captains — seniors Sarah Svedin and Nicole Kenney — with powering the Moose to the win in the final two games.

“I’ve been praising my captains all along,” Reynolds said. “And I thought they did a nice job in that third and fourth game.”

Svedin and Kenney each finished with a team-high 10 kills, and the leadership each showed on the floor impressed Reynolds particularly.

“They were both doing their share of taking and pounding the ball, and they were taking control of the team, and saying ‘lets get going’,” Reynolds said. “I’m just super impressed with him.”

Reynolds also noted the play of senior Geneva Ratcliff, who finished with nine kills, and junior Mikaela Bolling, who posted 15 digs.

Palmer improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Northern Lights Conference play against a team seen as a premiere squad in the conference.

“It’s a good start,” Reynolds said. “I still like Colony’s team. They’ve got a good team.”

Palmer continues NLC play against Kodiak this weekend.

The Moose host the Bears today at 6:30 p.m. at Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Wasilla 3, Houston 0

The Wasilla Warriors posted a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-16) nonconference win over Houston on Tuesday at Wasilla High School.

Junior Jenna Johnson led the Warriors with six kills and two blocks. Senior Ashlen Welch posted 14 digs, and senior Kahle Ess scored three

aces.

Wasilla’s match against West Anchorage on Thursday was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.
