Prep wrestling: Knights dominate Vandergaw

Defending Alaska Class 4A state champion Colony showed why it’s a clear favorite to repeat again this season, routing the 23-school field at the 2007 Glenn Vandergaw Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Dimond High School in Anchorage.

Colony’s total of 260 points was nearly double that of second-place Chugiak, which finished with 145. Bethel was third, North Pole fourth and Service fifth.

The Knights advanced eight wrestlers into the Saturday’s finals, including Charles Coisman (103 pounds), Kyle Wilson (119), Zac Beauchamp (125), Sam Loggins (130), Aaron Boss (135), Levi Krueger (145), Angelo Bellotte (189) and Eric Fan (215).

Coisman and Wilson both won their weight class, while the others each finished second.

The Wasilla Warriors placed ninth, led by fourth-place finishes by Pat Chafin at 135 pounds and Jed Johnson at 275.

Palmer’s Nick Stahler was the top Moose finisher, losing a tight 8-6 decision to Chugiak’s Quincy Voris in the 140-pound finals. The Moose finished 12th overall.

Houston’s Justin Crowley finished third at 215 pounds for the Hawks, which finished 19th.

The tournament served as the regular season finale for the Alaska high school season. Colony will host next weekend’s Northern Lights Conference tournament beginning Friday, with the Class 4A state tournament the following weekend at Chugiak High.

Several dual matches were contested Friday as part of the tournament, with the Wasilla Warriors splitting a pair against Chugiak and Kodiak.

The Warriors easily got past Kodiak, winning 60-9, but weren’t as fortunate against Chugiak, losing a close 36-31 decision.

Michael Spano (103), Mike Chafin (119), Beebo Russell (215) and Jed Johnson (285) each picked up two wins in the Friday duals.
