WASILLA — It may have been an Anchorage tournament, but a pair of Valley teams ruled the Glenn Vandergaw Invitational Saturday at Dimond High School.

The Colony Knights rode five individual champs to the tourney team title, and the Wasilla Warriors bagged wins in four different weight classes en route to a second-place finish in the team standings. The Knights and the Warriors also produced a few of the highlight matches of the one-day event.

In a match of a pair who advanced to the 4A state finals last year, Colony’s Levi Hopkins edged Wasilla’s Berit Sturgeon 6-4 in sudden victory in a 138-pound round-robin match. In the 126-pound final, Wasilla’s Isaiah Elvsaas scored a 4-2 win over Colony’s Sam Sisco, a state champion two years ago.

In a tournament that used both a round-robin format and a bracket, depending on the number of grapplers in each weight class, Colony crowned five champs. Hopkins, Vincent Cramer (106), Caleb Hopkins (160) and Dawson Nash (182) each placed first in round-robin weight classes. Robert Haan pinned Wasilla’s Chase Minnick in the 195-pound final.

Levi Hopkins, Nash and Haan are defending state champions.

Wasilla scored four individual titles. Levi Schumacher won the 113-pound round robin bracket. Elvsaas used his victory over Sisco to score the 126-pound title. Micah Mathis beat South’s Jacob Shack 15-7 to win at 120. Sam Wolff defeated South’s Weston Martin 8-3 to win the 145-pound class. Mathis and Wolff are both defending state champs.

Knights 2nd in Nikiski

Colony also sent a team to the Peninsula Duals in Nikiski, and the Knights placed second in the tournament.

Homer beat Colony 51-22 in the final dual.

Jacob Harvey (98), Kolby Torres (120), Macarius Floresta (145), Eric Christy (152) and Tuckey Eby (220) each scored wins for the Knights in the final.
