Prep wrestling: Warriors win Pilot Invite in Juneau

JUNEAU — The Wasilla Warriors posted 173 total points and walked away with the team title of the Brandon Pilot Invitational Tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School on Saturday.

Five Warriors advanced to the finals and two won induvidual titles. Kendra Nelson won the 103-pound class, while Jed Johnson was first at 285.

Mike Chafin (119), Jake Marshall (145) and Beebo Russel each finshed as the runner-up in their weight class.

Five Warriors wrestled in the consolation finals.

Jake George (119), Chris Gross (130) and David Muzechuk (135) finished third, while Josh Brown (125) and Pat Chafin (135) placed fourth.

Palmer finished sixth in the Pilot Invite team standings with 105.7 total points.

Two Moose wrestlers advanced to the finals in the same weight class.

Nick Stahler pinned teammate Adam Pahnke in the 140-pound final.

Sam Heindel finished third at 189 for the Moose.

grapplers in West Invite finals

ANCHORAGE — Saturday proved to be a good day for the Wasilla wrestling program. The Warriors won the team title at the Brandon Pilot Invitational at Juneau-Douglas High School, and sent a second WHS squad to the West High Invitational at West Anchorage High School.

There the Warriors finished sixth.

Michael Spano led WHS to a sixth-place finish at the West Invite with an individual title at 103.

Spano was one of two Valley wrestlers to advance to the finals.

Paul Amore led Wasilla Lake Christian School to a 10th-place finish by placing second at 119.

Wasilla Lake also had two other wresters finish fourth — Ty Walters (160) and Sean Messinger (285).

Five Warriors finished in the top four. Casey Katchinska (171) and Jake Johnson (285) were third, while Chris Milstead (140) was fourth.

Palmer also sent teams to both Juneau and West High.

Jesse Smith led Palmer with a fourth-place finish at 119 in the West High Invite.

WASILLA — With less than a month to go in the 2007 high school wrestling season, the defending class 4A champion Colony Knights have picked up pretty much where they left off.

Coming off a win at the Alaska Dual Meet Championships, the Knights are ranked first in the most recent AKMat.org state wrestling poll.

Sophomore Charles Coisman at 103 pounds and junior Josh West at 140 are both the top-ranked wrestlers at their weight class, while the Knights also have seven other wrestlers ranked in the top-five, including freshman Isaac Wilson (5th at 103), junior Kyle Wilson (2nd at 119), senior Zach Beauchamp (3rd at 125), senior Aaron Boss (2nd at 130), senior Levi Kruger (4th at 145) and Tyler Milner at

171.

Lathrop, which lost in the finals to Colony at the dual meet championships last weekend, is ranked second, followed by Chugiak, East and North Pole.

Chris Crane, a junior at 189 pounds, is ranked third to lead the Wasilla Warriors, which have four ranked wrestlers. In addition to Crane, senior Mike Chafin (4th at 119), junior Casey Katchinska (5th at 160) and junior Jed Johnson (5th at 285) also cracked the top-five.

Palmer senior Jake Minturn and junior Nick Stahler are both ranked third, Minturn at 140 and Stahler at 145.

Houston senior Justin Crowley, who already has two tournament wins under his belt this season, is currently ranked third at 215 pounds, the only Hawks wrestler to crack the top five.
