To the editor:
While I no longer have children in the Mat-Su Borough school system and my grandson will be graduating this year, I still support a Yes vote on Proposition 3 because the borough need what the bond issue will do.
1 Our Valley population continues to grow rapidly and with it our need for schools to educate our new students. School construction takes time and we already have a large number of students attending school in portables. Portables are only a temporary solution; they provide space, but do not have support facilities nor are they efficient.
2 Our existing schools area aging and some need major repairs to heating, ventilation, lighting, bathrooms, roofs and alarm systems. Continued deterioration will only lead to more costly repairs in the future.
3 Our Career and Technical High School is meeting the educational needs of some of our students, but needs to complete its projected Phase Three to provide meaningful education to many additional young people. We need to educate our future workforce and taxpayers.
4 We need the funding which the state of Alaska will provide. As a business owner, I do not welcome the additional taxes that a bond issue will entail, but I also realize that, at the present, the state of Alaska will reimburse borough taxpayers 60 percent to 70 percent of the cost of the projects. That seems like a good deal to me.
Please vote yes for Proposition 3
