A group of Mat-Su Valley outdoorsmen recently combined the joys of ptarmigan hunting, snowmachining and lodge camping in an early spring excursion to the Denali Highway area. The men trailered their snowmachines to Cantwell and then rode them 63 miles to Alpine Creek Lodge. The lodge on the Denali Highway is only accessible by snowmachine or dogsled team from Oct. 1 to May 15. The men used Alpine Creek Lodge as their base while sledding out in search of ptarmigan

Hunters shot these ptarmigan, which they later cleaned and ate.
