Upon my arrival to Alaska last April, it was made clear to me that you are not a true Alaskan until you make it through a winter. I would be asked, “How do you like Alaska so far?” I would respond, “I love it!” Then the person asking would quickly try to dampen my enthusiasm with, “Well, we’ll see come winter. You’re not a true Alaskan until you’ve been through a winter here.”
I hit a moose with my truck once and asked if that qualified me as a true Alaskan. “It’s a start.” Was the response. It was a minor love tap on it’s rear. No damage to either of us. Well, winter has come and is almost gone. I survived. I have a long winding drive that goes uphill to get to my place. I was stuck on it more than once. I survived the biting cold on a windy day. I learned that even if I am taking a short walk from a building to my vehicle, I have to bundle up. The winter here can be very unforgiving if I let my guard down even for a minute. The darkness adds to the winter mystique, but for me it was a minor issue. I still love it here.
Now it’s just a matter of qualifying for the PFD and being frustrated that the state isn’t paying me the full amount.
