Put Hatcher plan to vote of people

You have all heard of the planned Hatcher Pass ski resort. All private enterprise walked away because there is no money to be made. Therefore, the Borough intends to bill the taxpayers the entire cost of construction, $18 million, plus the annual operational fees.

The plans include road construction, ski lifts and day lodge. With today’s accelerated cost of living, especially fuel oil and gasoline over $4 per gallon, the cost to run the ski resort will be added to the tax base. In addition, we have a large number of new residents from the Bush due to the high cost of living in the villages. We need to accommodate the new folks into our schools and other public services.

I don’t think we need the added tax burden for a ski resort. Naturally, we are in an economic crisis. This is not the time for a new toy.

If the people of the Valley want a ski resort, take it to the ballot and let citizens decide; not the Borough manager and assembly.

Please call your Borough assemblymen and contact other Valley citizens to do the same.
