PALMER — The Quilts of Valor Foundation will honor 25 veterans on Patriots Day at 2 p.m., Sept. 11 at the Alaska Veterans and Pioneer Home in Palmer. The Colony High School JROTC Drill Team will display the colors. Colorful handmade Quilts of Valor will be awarded to 17 new resident veterans as well as eight other valley veterans to thank them for their service to our country during wartime. Veterans who stood in harm’s way from World War II down to the present will be honored.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. More than 105,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded since Blue Star Mom Catherine Roberts founded the organization in 2003 while her son was deployed to Iraq. Many have received their quilts on the battlefield or in hospital before being returned home to heal.
