New asphalt pays off for tirpack
WASILLA, AK -- Anchorage's Rob Tirpack came up through the back of the pack to win Saturday's Matanuska Telephone Association 75 lap race at North Star Speedway in Wasilla.
Tirpack, who leads the SST points race, out-ran Kenai sprint car expert Jackie McGahan through lap traffic for the win.
"I just found the groove," Tirpack said in the ASAP Finish Line Victory Lane after using a new patch of asphalt to his benefit.
Tirpack also won last years SST 99-lap race in the same fashion.
Four was a good number for Doug Johnstone Saturday. Johnstone won both heats and topped off his perfect night with a feature win, becoming the first driver to win two Legends car features this year.
Palmer's Mike Thomas followed close behind with Willie Creech, Mike Braddock and Anchorage's Michelle Kyte in tow.
Go-cart whiz Al Palma missed Saturday's races after crashing in practice.
Other winners Saturday included Lash Larew, Larry Theobald, and John Klayum in baby grands. Theresa Page and Dan Rodrigue in the mini stock division. Fairbanks's Ashlee Hansen swept the bandolero class and David Retherford notched a second win in the thunder stocks over Eric Wittner and Gary Keeling.
