Racing opens at Capitol Speedway

WILLOW — Action opened at Capitol Speedway on Saturday with the Willow raceway’s first events of the season on the dirt oval track.

Guy Hamilton (stock class), Dave Burke (mini-stock class), David Spain (truck class), Jeff Wallace (300 sprints), Doug Fisher (360 sprints), Tandi Fox (hobby stock) and George Park (modified lite) each finished first in their respective events.

Racing at Capitol Speedway continues this weekend with stocks and sprints on Saturday and Sunday. The races start at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Capitol is also hosting a demolition derby on Sunday.

North Star ready to open season

WASILLA — North Star Speedway will open its summer racing season Saturday at the Wasilla raceway.

North Star is also billing opening day as the track’s military appreciation day. There is a $5 admission for fans with military identification.

The pits are scheduled to open at noon on Saturday, the grand stands open at 4 p.m., the qualfying runs start at 5 p.m. and the races begin at 6:30 p.m.

Houston driver among winners

BUTTE — Houston’s Art Normand was among the top drivers during racing action at the Alaska Raceway Park in the Butte on Saturday.

Normand hit 104.84 mph in the Super ET.

Anchorage’s Ron Bowerman (Top ET), Eagle River’s Robert Vandenberg (Mod ET), Soldotna’s Marion Ulen (junior dragster), Anchorage’s Bob Lee (trophy) and Fairbanks’ Michelle Maynor (open air) also won events.

Racing at the Butte quater-mile drag strip continues Sunday and Monday with the Prockish Memorial Top Eliminator.
