Ravens tops in second straight

ANCHORAGE — The Mat-Su Ravens achieved another program milestone Thursday night.

With a 3-1 win over South/Bartlett at the Ben Boeke Arena in Anchorage, the Valley’s lone girls’ prep hockey program earned its first win over an Anchorage program in team history.

“We’re continuing on the building we’ve been doing,” Mat-Su head coach Dudley Boehm said

The victory was Mat-Su’s fourth of the season and second straight. The Ravens blanked Chugiak/Eagle River 2-0 last week. Prior to those wins, Mat-Su’s only victories had come against the Fairbanks Arctic Bears. Mat-Su has two wins and an overtime loss against Fairbanks this season, and its first win in team history came against the Bears at the tail end of the 2007-08 campaign.

Rosey Fujimoto, Louisa Good and Katrina Hammond each scored in the win over South/Bartlett, which dropped to 8-11-0 with the loss.

Mat-Su (4-8-0) took the 1-0 lead at the 1:30 mark of the first when Fujimoto, who scored both of the Ravens’ goals during the win over Chugiak/Eagle River, slipped the puck past South/Bartlett netminder Hannah Papa.

Fujimoto’s mates on the top Mat-Su line, Jessica Larrabee and Mikhayla Waugaman, assisted on the play.

Fujimoto, who is expected to play women’s college hockey next season at the Division III level, recorded assists on Mat-Su’s final two goals.

Fujimoto set up Good’s power play tally early in the second to help Mat-Su jump to a 2-0 lead. Hammond put the Ravens up 3-0 just more than two minutes later.

Bry Forrest scored the lone South/Bartlett goal.

Boehm said the Ravens were able to control the play for much of the contest.

“We played well. We were taking care of the puck. We forechecked, we backchecked,” Boehm said.

Boehm said Mat-Su goalie Danielle Schuetter, who stopped 15 South/Bartlett shots, also stood out in the win, but she didn’t see nearly as much pressure as she’s seen in past games.

“We didn’t have to rely on her by being outshot horribly,” Boehm said.

Mat-Su caps its 2008-09 season with a three-game stay in Fairbanks this week. The Ravens will face the Arctic Bears on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Interior.

Dimond/West skated past Mat-Su 6-0 on Friday. Schuetter stopped 22 of the 28 shots she faced in the loss.
