Ravens winning streak hits 3 games

ANCHORAGE — The Mat-Su Ravens battled it out here Saturday against the Service/East high school girls hockey team and brought home a tough 4-3 overtime win.

While Service/East jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, sophomore assistant captain and defenseman Amanda Engan cut into that deficit, netting the Ravens’ first goal of the night. Going into the second period, senior captain and defenseman Kadin Mulneaux ripped a strong slap shot from the blue line to tie the score at 2.

Service/East responded quickly to take the lead back 3-2 before the end of the period.

The entire third period was an all-out battle between both teams. Junior assistant captain and forward Johnna Elkins made up for time spent in the penalty box by tying the game again and forcing into overtime. Within the first two minutes of the extra period, it was sophomore forward Taylor Buness who ended the game with the winning goal.

With only five total shots on the Service/East net, the Ravens made sure that every one counted. The real standout of the game for the Ravens (3-0) was freshman goaltender Emma Pettit, who made 29 saves on 32 shots.

“I am very proud of how the girls play. They did an outstanding job and are really coming together as a team,” said head coach Mark Engan.

Next week the Ravens face off against Diamond/West in their home opener, 5:15 p.m. at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena.
