To the editor:
None of us like to see our electric bill doubled in the past six months. Ours has, with same number of kilowatt-hours used a year ago and a very mild winter, with almost zero car plug-in usage and extra space heaters. The idea of the new Eklutna power plant is to get off the Chugach costs.
As far as the new employer numbers, the Valley is growing leaps and bounds. Given the purchasing power of the 500-sheets-to-a-roll, scented currency, MEA employees are not overpaid — it takes $4 to buy one silver dime. The cost of food and many other things has doubled in the last five years. Mr. Downing should be grateful, and stop complaining. I have a 90-year-old friend in Pasadena, California, who has a water sewer and garbage bill of $800 a month.
Let’s count our blessings: clean water, air, and a great place to raise children.
