Reader gives input on recycling

Regarding the article on the "Landfill grant refused," headline Frontiersman, Nov. 13, 2001: Why do the property owners have to pay for what everyone gets the use of? The suggestion for the price of dumping is fine, but how often are these shallow suggestions instituted? It is always the property owners who have to pay for what everyone benefits from.

My suggestion: Make some type of "law" (enforcement of some type) so that all would have to use the recycling opportunities. There have been tons and tons of things saved from the landfill due to the recycling operations within the past few years. Had this not been a fact, the borough would not have provided the land for recycling to build a permanent place for same.

Everything under the sun can be/has been/has had/will have a type of law for it. Why not the recycling? I do not mean to have 90 committees involved. If that has to be involved we will never have anything done -- except job security for the committee persons.

I am well aware younger people have to earn a living, learn trades, study various subjects in conjunction with their desire to learn whatever it is they want to learn; however, when it comes to saving, making the most of something, not spending thousands, millions, even billions of dollars, some of you in the position to do so should listen and hear older people who have been there and done that.

How do you think those of us who have lived through everything from the Great Depression, to date, did it? Let me assure you, it was not from spending money we did not have and/or depending on some source, other than ourselves, to pay it for us!

There may not be a single (young) person who reads this letter. Hell, it may not even get printed. Think about it -- who had all of you young, smart ones? You sure did not have each other!
