To the editor,
For me, there are at least six reasons why I am going to vote “No” on making permanent the increase to three percent in the Wasilla City sales tax.
Reason #6: The sales tax needs to go back to the normal two percent first; that’s what I expected it to do when I voted on the temporary increase to fund building the library.
Reason #5: The list of proposed projects is problematic; who made this list?
Reason #4: Everything we build has a maintenance cost. I think that before we agree to spend $85 million on capital projects, we need to consider how we will pay for the maintenance and upkeep of those projects, and how much of an additional increase in the sales tax we’ll need to pay for that. Look at how much the Sports Complex costs annually! Depending on how you slice and dice the numbers, it costs taxpayers between $500,000 and a million dollars a year.
Sadly, there’s even more important reasons why I’m planning to vote “No” on making the increase permanent: stay tuned.
