Recall Governor Dunleavy Campaign launch gets more than 10,000 signatures

On Thursday, the Recall Dunleavy campaign officially launched.

Approximately 20 communities, both urban and rural, turned out to signature gathering events. The day’s events kicked off at 10am in Juneau and rounded out at 7pm in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

“One of the biggest stars was the community of Yakutat who garnered signatures from 30% of the registered voter population on the first day at Mallott’s General Store,” said Meda DeWitt, chair of Recall Dunleavy. In the nine-hour span the campaign gathered over 10,000 signatures on the first day. Events will continue throughout the weekend statewide and individual volunteer canvassing efforts have also begun around the state.

The signature gathering event at Planet Alaska in Juneau drew diverse groups from the community. Some of the first people standing in line were Republicans who were unhappy with having voted for Dunleavy. One of the first signers said, “I helped cause this problem. I voted for Dunleavy. And now he’s destroying the Alaska that I love.”

“We heard signers say over and over and over again that they feel voiceless and signing the recall helps to give them a voice,” said Vivian Mork, owner of Planet Alaska.

The campaign’s website, recalldunleavy.org, which launched midday on July 31st, raised over $13,000 in small donations from Alaskans in the first 24 hours of launching.

“I would like to thank all of our volunteers and signers across the state. This is truly a product of Alaskans taking a stand for their families, communities, and state.” said DeWitt.
