PALMER — Wylie Mangelsdorf, a recent graduate of Palmer High School, beat a former high school rival to win the Colony Days Bill Mitchell Race Sunday in Palmer.
Mangelsdorf, a former cross country and track standout with the Moose, finished the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes and 33.25 seconds, about 23 seconds faster than Noah Ripley, who will be a junior at Wasilla High School next fall.
Eric Norgaard (17:09), Christopher Ashland (17:14) and Cody Priest (17:21) rounded out the top five.
Leslie Varys finished first in the women’s class to win her second race in as many weeks. Varys’ time of 17:40 was just more than a minute faster than the time of second-place Jenna Ford, an incoming sophomore at WHS.
Audrey Michaelson, who will be a sophomore at Colony High next fall, finished third at 19:48. Kristen King (20:01) and Alisa Kincaid (20:45) rounded out the top five.
The event, which is part of the MTA Summer Race Series, is typically scheduled for Father’s Day each year, but was part of the Colony Days festivities this year.
