Record broken in Hatcher Pass Marathon

WASILLA — The Hatcher Pass Marathon has a new record.

Crystal Berwick broke the women’s record in the seventh-annual race that leads runners 26 miles along Willow-Fishhook Road from Shirley Towne Drive to Independence Mine State Historical Pass on Hatcher Pass. Berwick clocked a time of 3 hours and 48 minutes in the race that also features nearly 5,000 feet of elevation gain. Berwick’s mark is two minutes faster than the prior record of 3:50:41, set by Marina Fleming in 2013. Berwick is just the third runner to win the women’s class while breaking the four-hour mark. Shawn McTaggert also accomplished that with her time of 3:54 en route to a win in 2015.

Grant Stevenson, of Anchorage, was the overall winner with a time of 3:38. Charlie Procknow, also of Anchorage, finished third overall, just behind Berwick at 3:48. Anchorage’s Justin Lange and Eagle River’s Andrew Baalerud rounded out the top 5, both finishing at the 3:53 mark.

The overall course record is 2:51:24, set by Sam Tilly in 2014.
