The 14th annual Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off at the Alaska State Fair isn’t until Friday, but that didn’t stop a Wasilla man from smashing a 20-year-old world record on Wednesday.
Steve Hubacek brought in a 125.9-pound cabbage, which tops the previous world record of 124 pounds set in 1989 in Wales, United Kingdom. Before that, the cabbage record stood for 124 years.
“It’s great for the fair,” said Kathy Liska, superintendent for giant vegetables. “Our fair has never had a world-record cabbage. Now, we just broke a record held for 20 years.”
Hubacek’s mark may be short-lived, as the giants are set to weigh off tonight at 6 p.m. at the Farm Exhibits building on the fairgrounds.
Robb rolls
In addition to Hubacek’s cabbage, Palmer resident Scott Robb broke his own world record by bringing in an 82.9-pound rutabaga. His previous mark was 79 pounds. Robb also has the world record kale at 105.9 pounds.
