Recovery rally hopes to raise awareness

Alaska Family Services will host a recovery rally in Wasilla from 1 to 4 p.m., Sept. 17 at the Alaska Family Services Behavioral Health Treatment Center, 5851 E. Mayflower Court in Wasilla to raise awareness of substance use disorder and inform people of the available treatment and recovery resources.

The rally is in conjunction with the 22nd annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. This year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Recovery Benefits Everyone!” intends to raise awareness about substance abuse as well as the effectiveness of treatment and the possibility of recovery.

More than 23 million people in the United States needed treatment for a substance use disorder in the past year, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, and an estimated 28,000 adults in Alaska struggle with substance abuse.

The family friendly event includes free food, games and activities for children, speakers, performances and activities designed to educate the community about substance use disorders, promote positive approaches to combating stress and honor those living a healthy life in recovery.
