Breathe Free Mat-Su would like to salute Valley Community for Recycling Solutions for its new smoke-free workplace policy. The policy will protect VCRS employees and patrons from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
Second-hand smoke is a leading cause of preventable death. Nationwide, it accounts for an estimated 50,000 deaths annually. In Alaska, as many as 120 people die from second-hand smoke-related causes each year. That’s more than the number of people killed each year in motor vehicle accidents and about three times the number of deaths caused by homicide.
By prohibiting smoking in the workplace, VCRS is protecting the health of its employees and patrons alike. We encourage all Valley businesses and organizations to do the same.
