MAT-SU — Valley Community for Recycling Solutions’ recycling center has ceased to accept “Mixed Plastics” and in its place is a new category called Plastic No. 5.
“We are sorry for this change; it is beyond our control,” said Mollie Boyer, executive director for Valley Community for Recycling Solutions. “This is an issue being addressed across the nation and around the world.”
Boyer said the new Plastic No. 5 category is made of polypropylene, a plastic that is not known to leach toxins and is readily recyclable. The four categories of plastics VCRS now accepts are bottle:
• No. 1 PETE,
• No. 2HDPE jugs,
• No. 5PP food containers,
• and stretchy plastic.
“Thank you for your patience while we navigate the evolving plastic packaging recycling markets,” Boyer said.
