Redington boys win Denali Conference wrestling title

The Redington Huskies are the new kids in the Division II Denali Conference. Saturday in Valdez, the Huskies crashed the party.

Redington earned the boys team title during the Denali Conference Championships at Valdez High School. The Huskies also finished second in the girls team standings.

The Huskies, along with rival Houston, moved to the Denali from the Kachemak following the 2024 season.

Redington moved six wrestlers into the boys finals and four were crowned champions. Michael Trudeau scored a 18-2 win by technical fall over Cordova’s Brady McManus in the 119-pound final. Seth Shepard pinned Trace Arnberg of Valdez in the first round at 12 pounds. Christian Marquez-Hopson also notched a first-round pin, beating Malin Blood of Valdez at 152. Eben Caulkins pinned Houston’s Eli Banks late in the 140-pound final.

Ikaia Flores (160) and Triston Charley (189) also advanced to the finals and placed second.

Redington’s Braiden Greene (145), Marcus Holley (152), Micheal Marque-Hopson (171) and Ayden Bryne (189) each finished third.

The top three in each weight class qualify for the ASAA Division II state tournament.

Redington won the boys team title with 200 total points, nearly 40 points better than runner-up Delta.

Houston, which finished fourth in the team standings, crowned a pair of champions. Corwin Rein pinned Hutchison’s Jason Lopez at 215 points. Carson Scully also finished first at 103. Eli Banks was second for the Hawks at 10.

Sawyer Love led Susitna Valley with the 125-pound title after pinning Cordova’s Trent Dundas. Rams heavyweight Tasi Taala placed third and advanced to state.

The Redington girls finished second in the team standings with 119.5 total points. Delta won the conference title with 188.5 points.

Lilly Fogelman led the Huskies girls, pinning Delta’s Tralee O’Flannagan to win the 152-pound title. Ashlynn Akers (100), Alexis O’Mary (114), Iselin Swalling (120) and Jayli Jones (138) also placed second for the Huskies and advanced to state.

Samantha Trelfa led Houston with a second-place finish at 145.
