As the Redington Huskies fall sports teams start their seasons, there are a handful of recent graduates who are embarking on their college athletic careers.
Seven members of Redington’s class of 2022 will play at the college level this year. The list includes football players Wayde Bowman, Logan Seymore, Mason Brouillet and Jaden Spaulding; basketball player Lexi Seymore; wrestler Charlie Severance; and Cort Sandefur, a member of the track team.
Spaulding earned an opportunity to play at the Division I level, and will suit up for Wagner College in New York. Bowman, Broulliet and Logan Seymore will play at Simpson College, a Division III program in Iowa.
“We were all together since the eighth grade. We were all athletically gifted. We knew we just needed to work hard, and it doesn’t matter where we came from,” Bowman said recently regarding the chance for he and his teammates to make the move from a small high school to the college level of athletics. “Now that it’s actually happening it puts a smile on my face. What we said back in the day is really coming true and is a reality.”
Spaulding, Bowman, Broulliet and Seymore helped Redington win its first state championship in school history with the 2021 Division III state football title. Each of the four earned first-team all-state honors. Spaulding was named the Division III offensive player of the year, and Broulliet was the Division III lineman of the year.
Bowman, Broulliet and Logan Seymore will be joined at Simpson by Lexi Seymore, Logan Seymore’s twin sister and the most decorated girls basketball player in Redington history.
“We are all pretty tight. I’m excited,” Bowman said of his Redington classmates who will all attend Simpson.
Lexi Seymore was named the 2022 Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 3A Girls Player of the Year. She was also the most valuable player in her region. Seymour set school records with 1,226 points and 776 rebounds.
Severance will wrestle for Division II University of Mary in North Dakota. As a junior, Severance became the first Redington wrestler in school history to win a state title. He is also the first Husky to place in state all four years, and never placed lower than third. He is also a four-time region champ, and helped lead the Huskies to consecutive region titles and a runner-up finish in the state championship team standings.
Sandefur will compete for the Division II track and field team at Montana State in Billings. Sandefur earned a state title in the shot put as a senior, and was a runner-up in the discus. As a junior, Sandefur won a region title in the discus and was the runner-up in state.
