It took less than two minutes into regulation for Wayde Bowman to connect with receiver Logan Seymore on a 20-yard scoring strike. That was just the beginning for Bowman, who put together one of the best single-game passing performances in Alaska prep football history.

The Redington senior quarterback threw for 511 yards and eight touchdown passes during a 64-14 win over Kenai Sept. 11 in Kenai.

“It’s great for him to end up with stats like that,” Redington head coach Mathias Weinberger said earlier this week.

Bowman’s passing yards are the third most in a single game in state history according to Frontiersman archives. Soldotna’s Mark Wackler threw for 542 yards during a loss to Colony in 1996. Colony’s Robert Lorentz threw for 530 during a victory over North Pole in 2012.

Bowman now has 1,217 yards through the first four games of the season. Entering a home contest against Nikiski, Bowman also has 16 touchdown passes compared to only three interceptions.

And that;s not even what Weinberger is most excited about.

“The completion rate is actually what I’m really happy about,” the head coach said.

Weinberger has completed 65 of 91 attempts, and boasts a 71.4 completion percentage.

“That’s extraordinary for a high school quarterback,” Weinberger said.

Weinberger said Bowman possesses both the athletic attributes and intangibles.

“He’s a tremendous athlete, a tremendous student,” Weinberger said of Bowman, who carries a 4.4 grade point average. “Tremendous kid overall.”

Bowman, a 6-foot-4 signal caller, has also been with the program for four years, and is a three-year starter behind center. The senior has also been a big part of Redington’s transition from the run-based vier offense to the spread during the Weinberger era.

“He knows exactly what he can do in our system,” Weinberger said. “He grew up in our system.”

The success of the 4-0 start is thanks in part to the work the Huskies put in the last few seasons.

“We’ve been building, consistently working,” Weinberger said. “The guys are buying into it, and it’s good to see it pay off right now.”

The Huskies also have weapons surrounding Bowman. Seven different receivers caught at least one pass against Kenai, and four different targets hauled in touchdowns.

“That’s been a work in progress the last couple years,” Weinberger said of his athletes on offense. “It’s not just like you have one combination. He’s spreading the ball around, which is good to see.”

Senior running back Jaden Spaulding has 447 yards rushing and five rushing touchdowns, and 319 yards receiving and seven touchdown catches in four games this season. He’s averaging 191 total yards of offense per game.

With regular season games against Nikiski, Homer and Houston remaining, Weinberger said the focus is one week at a time.

“We are taking it day by day,” Weinberger said.
