To the editor,
When I read the editorial about welcoming refugees to our borough, I mentally applauded you. After reading the Sunday paper, I was very sorry I hadn’t written. I am saddened and dismayed that you heard overwhelmingly from those opposed to the idea.
I don’t like thinking I live among people so cruel and greedy they can view pictures of those thousands of people, men, women, and children, struggling to find safe shelter and not want to open hearts and homes.
I am reminded of our country’s actions in the Second World War when we turned away Jewish refugees from Europe, of our refusing to take any more Irish people starving because of the potato crop failure, and even earlier in our history.
