PALMER — Sign up now for a selection of Palmer Arts Council Summer Arts Programs offered in June and July for students ages 8 through middle and high school.

“Programs emphasize hands-on learning, positive adult relationships and take full advantage of the capacity of the arts to develop social skills such as teamwork, self-respect and self-discipline,” a council press release says.

Space is limited and registration is required. Fees charged, length of classes and scheduling varies.

Summer Theater Academies (ages 8 to middle school)

Ann Williams will lead the Palmer Arts Council’s Summer Theatre Academies for youth ages 8 through middle school who have an active interest in stage performance.

Participants will learn many skills necessary to become stage performers, including script memorization, voice, movement and improvisation; and stagecraft, such as lights, sound, set design and construction. The program is divided into three, two-week sessions and students may enroll in one, two or all three sessions. On Friday at the end of each two-week session, participants will present a public stage performance.

Sessions are June 3-14, June 17-28 and July 8-19, and classes are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday at Sherrod Elementary. Participants should bring lunch.

Cost is $275 per person, per session. However, some partial and full scholarships are available.

The program ends with an excellent band, playing challenging music to be enjoyed by the community at various public events during the last three weeks of the program. The program culminates with a community performance July 26.

Rehearsals are from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 4 to July 25 at Colony High School. Sectional rehearsals are Wednesdays.
