BUTTE — Rep. Bill Stoltze has organized a meeting to bring residents together with officials with the Mat-Su Borough, Department of Transportation, Department of Natural Resources, state Emergency Management Division and the Department of Public Safety to discussion the erosion problem along the Matanuska River.
The borough has been monitoring the river and helping homeowners where it can.
“We came really close to having the river come up on the road,” Stoltze said. “I’d like to know what’s DOT’s plan.”
Both the Glenn Highway and Old Glenn Highway run very close to the Matanuska River, which is causing this summer’s erosion problems and has already claimed at least one house, the relocation of another and continues to threaten a handful more.
The Matanuska River Erosion Community Meeting is at 6 p.m., Sept. 17 in the Butte Elementary School gymnasium.
In a press release announcing the meeting, Stoltze said the goal is to discuss the erosion problem with residents and develop better communication and cooperation with government agencies working on this issue.
“I’d like to get everybody in the room and find out who can and who can’t and who won’t,” Stoltze said.
