Repeat performances win Alaska Job Corps 5-K

MAT-SU — In a repeat performance of last year, Christopher Ashland won the 10th annual Alaska Job Corps 5-K on Saturday. Ashland, 22, of Big Lake, bested the field with a time of 18:12.

“That’s a little slow for me,” he said. “But that’s OK, because it was really windy.”

Ashland ran the course last year in 18:42. Early in this year’s race, Ashland established a comfortable lead over Boaz Sessom and Dylan Gumminger, who finished 21:19 and 21:20 respectively.

Top women in this year’s 5-K were Signe Johnson, who ran the course in 23:51, which was nearly two minutes faster than her winning time last year. Johnson was followed by Tatjana Spaic with a time of 24:05 and Kari Moss, who finished in 25:41.

The 10-K title went to Allan Spangler, who ran the breezy course in 40:35. Spangler was followed by Tom Luchsinger at 40:41 and Skyler Kaster at 43:14.

Becky Maxwell led the women in the 10-K with a time of 48:02. She was followed by Amy Roberts at 52:23 and Valerie Martinez, who posted 55:04.
