Rights of the many outweigh the greed of a few

To the editor:

When did we as a community decide that it was OK for someone else to lower our property values in order to provide a few part-time jobs? When did we agree to trade our God-given right to clean air and water in order for someone else to profit from irresponsible resource extraction? When did we agree to give up our constitutional right to privacy, which includes peace and quiet, in order to have a gravel pit, strip mine and cell towers in every neighborhood?

When did we decide to spend $300 million in taxpayer money on a project that only directly benefits Usibelli and the users of Port MacKenzie?

The answer is when we allowed a ceremonial mayor and his business cronies to take the public out of the public process, to declare that we are open for corruption and that we value personal and corporate greed over quality of life.
