Road construction forces school traffic reroutes

Road construction around two area high schools will make getting in and out of school zones a bit trickier than normal when school starts on Monday, August 17. Roundabouts are being constructed near Colony High, while the Bogard Road extension is affecting traffic patterns at Palmer High. The Mat-Su Borough School District has put out the following information to help drivers navigate both areas:

Colony Middle and Colony High School

Two new roundabouts are being constructed; one in front of Colony Middle School and the other at 49th State Street. The paving, striping, and construction work on the parking lot at Colony High School is complete. Both Colony Middle and High School parking lots are open for school traffic.

1. CMS: The existing Colony Middle School driveway will serve as both an entrance and an exit for all middle school traffic.

2. CHS: Student drivers and parents dropping off students at Colony High School will use a new Colony High School entrance which is located off of 49th State Street just north of the existing service entrance. This will serve as the ingress and egress route for parents driving their students to CHS and for student drivers.

3. Bus: All bus traffic will enter from the existing 49th State Street Colony High School service entrance and exit using the existing Colony Middle School driveway. Students on buses will enter and exit the school via the rear of both schools.

Palmer High School

1. Palmer High School’s parking lot can be accessed from either Hemmer Road, off of Palmer-

Wasilla Highway, or via Arctic Avenue coming from the Glenn Highway. Buses will utilize the new bus loop for student drop off and pick-up off of Arctic Ave.

2. The closure along Arctic Ave. will be in place through this Sunday, 8/16, but will be opened prior to school opening on Monday, 8/17. Please allow for additional travel time when accessing your school during the next few weeks.
