Road Warriors close the door against East Anchorage T-Birds

ANCHORAGE — The Alaska Road Warriors weren’t going to let it happen two nights in a row.

A day after watching a 10-2 lead disappear during a 14-11 loss to Dimond, the Wasilla-based American Legion baseball squad slammed the door during a 13-1 win over East Anchorage Wednesday night at Kosinski Fields in Anchorage.

“The bats just came alive,” Alaska head coach Myrl Thompson said. “We had a lot of extra base hits.”

David Newman led the Warriors with four hits, including a triple and two doubles. Damon Hammer also posted a triple and a pair of doubles. Brody Coleman drove in three runs.

Jacob Butcher worked four innings on the mound to get the win. Isaac Coursen pitched the final inning of the victory.

The teams were tied at 1 heading into the third inning, but Alaska managed to plate a dozen runners during the final three frames.

On Tuesday, Alaska took a 10-2 lead into the seventh, but Dimond rallied before the Warriors could take the win with the mercy rule.

“We couldn’t get the three outs to close it out,” Thompson said.

Dusty Wisdom made the start and was stellar for the Warriors, allowing only two runs to the defending Alaska American Legion state champions in 6 1/3 innings. But the Lynx managed to attack the Warrior bullpen.

Newman and John Stormont led the Alaska offense with two RBI each. Cory Clevenger led Dimond with four hits and four RBI.

The Road Warriors are in Fairbanks and will face the 49ers tonight and Saturday.
