PALMER — Jacob Gilbert and the Wasilla Road Warriors came out on top during a pitchers’ duel at Wasilla High School Saturday afternoon.
Gilbert worked a complete game to lead the Road Warriors to a 2-1 win over the Kenai Twins.
Gilbert fanned 10 in the game, while walking only two. The right-hander scattered three hits over seven innings.
Kenai also enjoyed solid work on the mound. Starter Logan Smith allowed only two hits and an earned run over five. He also fanned a half-dozen and walked two. Reliever Harold Ochoa allowed a hit and earned run in one inning.
Kenai struck early. Jeremy Kupferschmid led off the game with a single, and quickly scored on a David Michael single. Wasilla’s Kyle Graham scored on an error in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1. Late in the game, Wasilla cashed in on another Kenai error. Clayton Boyett scored on the error to provide the go-ahead run.
Boyett finished with two of Wasilla’s three hits in the win, and Kupferschimd finished with two of Kenai’s three hits in the loss.
Kenai rebounded to force the split with an 8-3 win over Wasilla in the second game. Mose Hayes and Harrison Metz scored two runs each. Hayes, Smith and Davey Belger drove in runs.
Graham, Balau Buckmaster and Calvin Stoll finished with an RBI each for Wasilla.
The second game was a nonleague contest.
Wasilla continued its success with a 3-1 win over West Anchorage on Sunday.
Austin Robertson pitched a complete game, and earned the win on the mound. Robertson allowed only five hits. Boyett scored two runs to lead Wasilla. Graham, Clancey O’Donnell and Waylon Payne each drove in a run.
Pioneers split Sunday doubleheader
The Palmer Pioneers split a pair of games Sunday afternoon at Redington.
Palmer blasted Service 17-4. Earlier in the day, Kenai edged Palmer 4-2. Brady Shults and Keagan Norman drove in runs for Palmer. Trace Severson and Ben Alley each drove in a run.
