Road Warriors enjoy big week; Pioneers fall in Kenai

WASILLA — It was a big week for the Wasilla Road Warriors.

After sweeping division leader South Anchorage July 4, the Road Warriors finished 3-1 during a weekend road trip to Fairbanks. Wasilla improved to 8-5 in league play with the wins, and moved into a second-place tie with Kenai in the Alaska American Legion American Division standings.

The biggest victory of the week came July 4 with a 7-2 win over South, which leads the American Division with a 10-4 league mark. James Arend finished 2 for 3 and drove in two in the win. Dawson White added two hits and was one of seven different Warriors to score a run. Kyle Graham, Cyrus Lovell and Ben Werner also drove in runs.

Wasilla completed the doubleheader sweep with a 12-11 nonleague win over the Wolverines. Sam Reed was 4 for 5 with four RBI and Taylon Ottinger finished 3 for 3 with a run and RBI. Jeffrey Forester added two hits and three runs.

The Road Warriors also scored a doubleheader sweep over the Alaska Wild (Fairbanks Post 30) July 8 in Fairbanks. Ben Werner drove in five runs in a 13-3 win over the Wild. Ottinger, Arend, Forester and Hank Boyer had two RBI each in a 13-2 game later that day.

Wasilla split a pair of games with the Fairbanks 49ers. The Warriors collected 17 hits during a 14-3 win over the 49ers July 7. Kyle Graham led Wasilla with four RBI. Wasilla dropped a 5-4 decision to the 49ers July 9.

Pioneers fall in Kenai

The Kenai Twins turned a two-run game into a 10-run win during a victory over the Palmer Pioneers Sunday afternoon in Kenai. The Twins scored eight unanswered runs en route to the 13-3 American Legion win over the Palmer post.

Palmer scored all three of its runs in the top of the third, cutting Kenai’s lead to 5-3. Alasdair McKechnie, Skyler Hale and Ben Alley each scored in the inning for the Pioneers.
