WASILLA — The Alaska Road Warriors opened their season with a 9-6 victory over the West Eagles Tuesday night at McManus field.
The Road Warriors used a cast of pitchers in the win, including Ian Stormont, Russell Ruta and David Newman, along with an impressive outing from Mitchell Chauvin. Bryce Borngraeber closed the game.
Alaska took the lead in the bottom half of the first inning after allowing a run to West. Newman broke a 4-4 tie with a bases clearing triple. Newman later scored.
Tyler Hansen made a spectacular late-inning catch deep into the outfield to highlight the Road Warriors’ defensive effort.
“Full extension, it was sweet,” head coach Myrl Thompson said of the play.
The Road Warriors face West again Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Anchorage. They play Dimond in a doubleheader at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday.
