Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer resident Mr. Robert Edward Sowinski, 62, died Oct. 4, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends. A wake was held Saturday at his home at Lazy Mountain. Mr. Sowinski was born June 10, 1941, in Cataract, N.J., to Edward and Blanche Sowinski.
He graduated from Cataract High School in 1959 then joined the Navy where he served from 1959-1963. He served his time on a Destroyer Tender on both the east and west coast. He married and moved to California in 1964 after his discharge. He resided in Long Beach and worked at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.
He came to Alaska in 1973 and worked at remote radar sites throughout Alaska. In 1978 he went to work on the North Slope for ARCO. He worked for numerous pipeline companies until his retirement in March 2003.
His family wrote, "Bob loved fishing, hunting, dog sledding, the freedom of Alaska and all of the family and friends he had made throughout his life."
He is survived by his sons Jason and James Donald Sowinski of Palmer, Barry Sowinski of Anchorage; mother Blanche Sowinski of N. J.; sisters Betty Ann Albbasyouny and Maize Kamont of N.J.
