Rockin’ for a cause

WASILLA — Three Alaska bands and a multi-part local fashion show — what more could you cram into a Saturday evening?

How about a halfpipe skateboard show?

Event promoter Joanna Gray said Rock the Runway event at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center promises a good time.

“I’m trying to make it to where it pops real big and people go, ‘Wow, what just happened?’” she said.

The part with the biggest pop, she said, will be the fashion show, part of which she said will be “theatrical” in nature, featuring brides in costumes. Like, for instance, a ghost bride.

“There’s nothing better than a ghost bride,” Gray said.

The fashions come from Dangerous Curves Lingerie and Bridal, Mila’s Alterations, All Seasons Clothing and Bruce’s Street and Skate. Gray said she hopes the show will help promote a buy local campaign she is working on in the Valley. People don’t need to drive to Anchorage to shop.

“Stop thinking Nordstrom’s,” she said.

As for music, Static Cycle, fresh from a gig at the Alaska State Fair, will headline. The band is based in Anchorage but has Valley roots — vocalist Jared Navarre grew up here.

Also on the bill are Stadium and the Audio, both Anchorage acts. Stadium describes itself on Facebook as indie acoustic rock and the Audio, for its part, went with indie shoegazer pop to describe themselves.

There’s also a public service component to the event. Emergency responders get in free, which, along with a moment of remembrance, is Gray’s way of acknowledging that the event happens on Sept. 11.

And all of the proceeds from Rock the Runway will go to the Brianna Gregory Foundation, a local nonprofit that stages fund-raisers for the Children’s Hospital at Providence and to fight Cystic Fibrosis.
