Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Long-time Alaska resident Rollie L. Hood died on Oct. 15, 2002, in Meadview Ariz.
He was born on Dec. 9, 1914, to Grace McCoy Hood and Gus Hood. He was one of nine children and was raised in the La Plata and San Juan river area of New Mexico. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, Masons, American Legion and numerous dog mushing associations in Alaska. He served with the United States Navy during WWII as a Motor Machinist Mate First Class. He was a commercial fisherman and diesel mechanic. He was a long-time member of Alaskan Dog Mushers, was one of the founding fathers of the Montana Creek Dog Musher's Association. He competed in the major Alaskan races in the '70s and '80s.
Mr. Hood is survived by his wife of 63 years Helen L. Hood; son George Hood, and his wife Connie; daughter Elaine Hood Potter, and her husband Dick; five grandchildren, Bob, Rick and Rod Potter, Mike Hood and Lisa Adams; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 23 at Valley Funeral Home, 151 East Herning Ave, in Wasilla, with interment following at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery.
