Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident Ronald Lyle Smith, 62, died of cancer at his home in Wasilla on April 2, 2004.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery in Anchorage on Tuesday at 2 p.m., where a portion of his ashes will be inurned. A military chaplain will officiate.
Mr. Smith was born Sept. 17, 1941, in Long Beach, Calif.
He came to Alaska in 1985, living in Anchorage for seven years, and also lived in Wasilla for 10 years.
Mr. Smith was a career electrician, working for Aerospace, Hughes Aircraft and Veco, and a weekend coordinator for the Brother Francis Shelter in Anchorage.
Mr. Smith also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict.
His family wrote, "He was a generous man with a compassion for helping those in need."
Mr. Smith is survived by his son David Smith of Alaska; brothers Tom Smith and Robert "Robbie" Smith, both of California; sisters Terri Thompson of California, and Vicki Lewis of Oregon; and grandson Damion Silvasey of Alaska.
A portion of Mr. Smith's ashes will be scattered by the family over Alaska's Sleeping Lady.
Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
