Colony freshman Jill Bowker leans into a curve on the state course at Bartlett High School Oct. 4. Bowker finished fifth overall in the 4A girls race of the ASAA/First National Bank State Cross-Country Running Championships, with a time of 19:16. CAITLIN SKVORC/Frontiersman

BARTLETT — While the Colony girls' team didn’t do as well as they’d hoped and the Wasilla boys were bested by the Kodiak team once again, those newest to high school cross-country had their best performances at the state championship meet.

Colony’s Jill Bowker, a freshman, finished first for the Knights, fifth overall behind Soldotna’s Dani McCormick, with a time of 19 minutes and 16 seconds at the ASAA/First National Bank State Cross Country Championship. It was a personal best for Bowker, almost a minute faster than her Region III meet time, but a slight sisterly mix-up might have disqualified the team completely.

Jill and her older sister Elisabeth accidentally switched jerseys — after they had already attached their bibs — in the bathroom just before the race, so the results read “Elisabeth Bowker” in the fifth-place slot, instead of Jill. The girls notified head coach Rhonda Knopp immediately after the race, and Knopp went to the race officials to explain. The response she received was kinder than she had expected, yet completely understandable.

“What? Two girls went to the bathroom? Together?” the race official said, according to Knopp.

She and the Bowkers had to laugh, but it was a huge relief. Though they only posted a fourth-place team finish when they expected second or definitely third, the girls said they would take that over a total DQ.

Alex Mathis, who finished second for Colony, was 25th overall with a time of 20:02, much farther back than she usually is or expected to be. Mathis was typically competitive with Riley Boroughs, of Wasilla, who pulled away from her on the second lap, moving up to a 16th-place finish in 19:46.

Mathis declined further comment, but Knopp said she suspected that Mathis’ performance was likely a result of her stressful week more than her training.

Cathelyne Powers, Colony’s third-place finisher last weekend, finished fifth on Saturday, behind the elder Bowker and Coleen Geraghty, who finished in 20:10 and 20:46, respectively. Like Mathis, Powers may have been battling a mental game, Knopp said.

“Alex and Cat did not have the best race of their season,” she said. “It took all five (at regions), and just two were enough to make the difference (at state).”

Still, Knopp remained optimistic about next season.

“We’re a young team,” she said. “We’re just learning.”

M.E. Meyerhofer, the tie-breaking runner at regions, ran in the state meet for the first time in her career. She said her race went “pretty well,” though “the middle part” of the course was “really hard.”

Meyerhofer finished sixth for the Knights in 21:33, a personal best, followed by Jocelyn Kopsack at 22:40.

“This is nothing to hang our heads over,” Knopp said. “We ran against some really good teams.”

Ruby Woodings, a sophomore at Palmer, was the other individual qualifier from the Valley, who finished 12th overall with a time of 19:37. Palmer assistant coach Tim Lundt said via email she "had a great race" and set a personal record by 24 seconds.

On the boys’ side, the Warriors were in high spirits after the race and posed for a number of pictures with coaches and family members before putting on some warmer clothes.

Despite finishing seventh as a team — Kodiak boys won the entire meet, in addition to their region win last weekend — senior and first-time runner Sam Loyer took first for the Warriors, finishing 26th overall with a personal record of 16:59.

“It was better than any one I’ve done before, but I haven’t done that many,” Loyer said of his race.

His highest finish on the Wasilla team was runner-up at the Seward Invitational, and he hadn’t run under 17 minutes prior to the state meet.

When asked if he had considered continuing his one-year competitive running career in college, Loyer said that walking onto a college team “sounds fun.”

Loyer was followed by senior Justin Gentz and junior Quincy Fuller, who came in together at 17:13, senior Colton Pulver, junior Karl Greathouse, senior Lane Reed and freshman Isaak Bell, respectively.

Wasilla coach Leslie Varys said prior to the awards ceremony that, unlike previous years where they’ve taken one boy and a whole girls team to state, this was a rebuilding years for the girls and a graduating year for the boys. Next season, it could be flipped again.

But this championship was also the fastest she and former head coach Gary Howell have seen in a while, Varys said.

“At 16:30 for the guys, they weren’t even in the top 10,” she said.

Still, five Warriors achieved personal records on Saturday, “or at least made huge improvements” since the beginning of the season, Varys said.

“We’re just so proud, and happy, and I don’t think we could’ve done anything different,” she said. “(The race) was so fast.”

Colony runners Dakota Peterson-Thompson and Tracen Knopp also competed in the meet individually, finishing 34th and 61st overall in 17:08 and 17:44, respectively.

Houston’s Andrew Spencer finished 13th in the boys’ 123A race, clocking a time of 17:34.
