ANCHORAGE — Thirty seconds could have changed everything for the Colony Knights.
Defending state champion Juneau-Douglas scored in the final minute of the first half and continued on to score a 3-1 win over the Knights in the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Championships quarterfinals at Dimond High School Thursday.
Juneau had the 1-0 lead when the Bears deflected a shot off a Colony player and into the net during the final minute to push ahead 2-0. If the Knights avoid that second JDHS goal, Colony head coach Jeremy Johnson said it’s a very different game.
“I was feeling OK at 1-0,” Johnson said.
But that extra score was just something else to overcome playing a team that has won 11 of its last 12 state quarterfinal matches.
Despite the deficit, Johnson liked his team’s effort.
“The guys worked hard, they didn’t give up,” Johnson said.
Freshman Chris Olsen put the Knights on the scoreboard in the second half. Senior Logan Basner put a long throw-in into the box. The ball bounced around until Olsen was able to get in front of it and knock a shot into the net.
Senior Matt Kelly had a quality opportunity in the first, but hit the post.
Johnson said the Knights are disappointed they’re not moving forward, but are working with a collection of talent new to this level of competition.
“We’re a young team, but we’ll rebound,” Johnson said. “I feel bad for the seniors, but we’ve got a good, young crew.”
Colony can still finish as high as fourth in the tourney. The Knights meet Northern Lights Conference rival Grace Christian in the consolation semifinals today at 5 p.m. at Chugiak High School.
Grace suffered a 2-0 loss to West Valley on Thursday. Grace and Colony tied 1-1 in an earlier meeting this year.
