To the editor:
The Sept. 21 paper has an article about the new roundabout on Truck Road. I first drove a roundabout in 1969 in New England, where they are called rotaries, and have gone through hundreds since then, including in Scotland where they love them. What is on Trunk Road is not a roundabout, but a bad imitation of one.
The fundamental principle of a roundabout is if you miss your exit you can continue around the circle and then exit on the next pass. The Trunk Road design with a required exit for the right-hand lane does not allow one to continue around the circle. The requirement to move to the inside lane to circle conflicts with the requirement to get into the right lane to exit. This is a formula for accidents.
The Department of Transportation should not build any more roundabouts until it learns how to properly design them.
Respectfully yours,
