Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

PALMER -- South Anchorage, competing in its first varsity sporting event, is the new kid in school, while Colony is the savvy veteran trying to find a way to the big dance. And Colony's way of welcoming South to the Alaska prep football circuit was much like an upperclassman giving a naive freshman a wedgie on the first day of school.
Fueled by a pair of Rhett Magner touchdown passes and two Randale Havery scoring runs, the Knights downed the Wolverines 35-0 at Colony High School on Friday.
As a team competing in the first game in the history of the program, South arrived at Colony as a wild card. Though the Wolverines' only live action came in the Chugiak Stampede just one week ago, the team does have numerous players with varsity experience, drawing talent from programs such as Dimond and Service. The Knights gauged what South might bring on the Wolverines' performance in the Stampede.
"We just went off of the tape from the Chugiak stampede," Magner said. "Being a new school they couldn't really change their defense in a week."
And the Knights took from what they saw on the video and applied the offensive pressure early, scoring three times in the first quarter and four times in the first half. Magner hooked up with Justin Schwartzbauer on a 3-yard fade early in the first quarter for a score, and tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Cunningham later in the quarter.
Magner finished 5-for-6 for 61 yards, spreading the ball to four different receivers. Schwartzbauer, Cunningham, Shawn Olivera and Austin Manelick each had catches.
Much of the focus of the CHS offense was on the ground game in the final three quarters. Colony ran the ball 27 times, gaining 186 yards.
With 50 seconds left in the first quarter, Olivera scampered for a 48-yard touchdown run. Olivera received the toss and followed a Cunningham block off the right side of the Colony line. Olivera hit the sidelines and dove into the end zone to beat a South defensive back.
Harvey notched a 53-yard scoring burst, his second touchdown of the game, midway through the third quarter. Harvey followed a pulling Dominick Bellotte and sailed past a group of Wolverines.
Despite his team scoring 35 points and piling up more than 200 yards of total offense, Colony head coach Randy Magner said the Knights did not reveal much offensively and still need to work on executing their game plan.
"I'm pleased, we got a big win, but I don't think we played as well as we could," Magner said.
