Run and splash: Water pit a favorite at annual Bartlett Relays

ANCHORAGE - Like lemmings from a cliff, cross country runners plunged into the unknown Saturday afternoon at Bartlett High School, risking injury and embarrassment for the good of the team.

Their goal?

Get past the famous Bartlett water jump in one piece.

&#8220You just don't want to land on your face,” Susitna Valley's Matthew Krepel said.

The water jump was the highlight of the Bartlett Relays, a unique season-opening event with a carnival-like atmosphere that has become the unofficial kick-off to the Alaska high school cross country season.

In addition to the water jump, the relays are contested in a different format than most meets, where individual athletes race against the field in hopes of scoring points for their team. At the relays, teams of four runners - two boys and two girls - each ran a lap around the approximately 2.5-mile course, with the first team to complete four laps declared

the winners.

Cross country powerhouse Kodiak won the overall title, led by a meet-best lap by defending state champion Trevor Dunbar. Palmer's A team (Jake Parisien, Lizze Lutz-Carnahan, Kevin Smith and Jacquie Lutz-Carnahan) was the top Valley team, placing eighth. Parisien clocked the fourth-fastest boys time to lead all Mat-Su finishers, while Lizze Lutz-Carnahan had the 22nd-best girls lap time to pace Valley girls.

With hundreds of athletes spread across the course at once, determining who was in the lead was anyone's guess. But judging by the action at the water jump, it appeared as if many runners were clearly focusing on style points over personal bests.

&#8220You've gotta do a cool pose,” Su Valley's Grant Hicks said.

The Rams definitely earned plenty of style points, with a bevy of athletes executing pirouettes and crowd-pleasing maneuvers as they launched themselves off hay bales and into the muddy water.

Su Valley didn't have the market cornered on unique dives, however. That honor likely went to Grace Christian's Peter Walls - who attempted a headfirst dive but ended up landing square on his face - or an East High duo that executed a perfect leapfrog into the pit.

While many of the runners had competed at Bartlett before, some first-timers had looks of dread spread across their faces as they approached the harrowing jump. Palmer freshman Kevin Pheley said he wasn't too worried himself, though he admitted a bit of apprehension as he neared his first-ever Bartlett plunge.

&#8220I'm like, ‘I hope I don't break my ankle,'” Pheley said.

After making the jump with no apparent difficulty, Pheley said he was ready for another go ‘round.

&#8220The water was awesome,” he said. &#8220It was a total refresh.”

Palmer junior Kiersten Dahms said her only thought as she approached the jump was not to crash and burn in front of the large contingent of fans that lined the race course.

&#8220I thought I was going to do a face plant,” Dahms said.

Like Pheley, Dahms managed to make it through the jump without plunging headlong into the muck. In fact, after finishing the race, she said the jump really was no big deal.

&#8220I thought it was going to be more scary than it was,” she said.

For Dahms, the best part of the relay format was that, unlike individual races, runners couldn't let up for fear of letting their three other teammates down.

&#8220You had to keep going because you knew the rest of your team was right there,” she said.

Palmer coach Tim Lundt said the Bartlett event was simply a fun way to get his team ready for competition before the regular season rolls around.

&#8220The kids enjoy this,” he said.

But while the relays were clearly more fun than fight - at one point someone in a gorilla suit raced across the Bartlett grounds chasing a terrified life-sized banana - Lundt said the point of competing in the event was to get his kids ready for the more serious races to come.

&#8220We'll be ready to go for next week,” he said.
