Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

I did it. I managed to run a mile on the treadmill without stopping, and more importantly, without sending my dinner across the AT&T Sports Center cardio room.
Thursday evening, while taking a little break from my deadline duties, I went down to the AT&T to get a quick workout in. I thought I’d hit the treadmill. I originally decided to run a half-mile. But when I reached the half-mile, I actually felt pretty good. Then I thought I’d go for three-quarters of a mile. And once again, at three-quarters of a mile I felt all right. Plus, since I had gone this far, I thought I might as well try for the mile.
And I did it.
To many who read this blog, running a complete mile on the treadmill without stopping may not seem like too big of a deal. But for me, it’s a huge accomplishment. I can almost guarantee this is probably the first time since I was a senior in high school that I actually ran a complete mile without stopping.
So it has been a while, a long while. And running for distance has never really been a strength to begin with.
But I think there are a lot of people out there who can relate. When you get to my size, and larger, running for distance can simply be difficult. It’s tough on the muscles and the joints. Plus, its pretty easy to get winded trucking around all of this weight.
I know that running will become an important part in my quest to lose weight and get stronger and into better shape. So it’s nice to see that my endurance is improving.
Running a mile was one of the goals I initially set when I started this process. Running a mile on the track is the next goal. Eventually, I want to beat my personal record for a timed mile, a mark I set during my senior year of football.
But in the meantime, it’s nice to put a check next to another goal. It’s just more proof that what I’ve been doing in the last five or six weeks is really working.
Continued luck to all,
JB
