PALMER — 2023 Iditarod champion Ryan Redington was recognized during the Mat-Su Borough Assembly meeting Tuesday, April 18.

Ryan is the first member of the Redington family to win the Iditarod.

The Redington family tree has its roots planted firmly around the Iditarod, starting with Joe Redington who was one of the founding members of the Iditarod and commonly referred to as "The Father of the Iditarod."

The Iditarod is a long and arduous journey spanning over 1,000 miles across the Alaskan wilderness from Big Lake to Nome. It's a race that isn't for the faint of heart and serves as a challenge to anyone daring and dedicated enough to attempt, let alone win.

Borough Mayor Edna DeVries read an official proclamation recognizing Ryan's historic victory.

"It takes a lot of preparation, training, hard work, and fortitude to take part in 'The Last Great Race,'" DeVries said as she read from the proclamation.

Ryan was recognized not only for his milestone achievement but also for keeping his grandfather's vision of preserving the historic Iditarod trail and Alaskan dog sledding culture.

"Ryan Redington continues the family legacy of dog racing and raising awareness for the sport of dog sledding," DeVries said.

Ryan was interviewed prior to the Borough Assembly meeting and stated that he was humbled by the amount of support and recognition that he's received from his community and across the state.

"It's a huge honor to have mushing and the Redington name be out there," Ryan said.
