Sales tax would spread the burden

To the editor:

As a financial planner for 20 years, working with small business and middle- income families, one of the best “bottom line” things government can do is lower property taxes. In order to achieve this though, there has to be another source of revenue. The 3 percent sales tax does this and then some.

A sales tax lets everyone “donate” to the tax basis, including tourists. This means 1/3 of the borough budget income will be distributed among people buying goods, not only tourists, but people driving out to the Valley to fish, hunt and other recreational activities. Borough property owners will now only bear 66 percent of the cost of government instead of 99 percent.

The 3 percent is accessed to the first $1,000 of a purchase, stops the assembly from creating bigger government by arbitrarily raising the mil rate, and if put into effect and does not do what it was intended to do will “sunset” in 2014.

So a Yes vote on Prop. 1 says we agree to “Spread the Burden”.
