Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Long time Palmer resident, Sandra Lynn Coons passed away Sunday, January 29th at home with her husband Mike and her trusty dog Rusty at her side. Sandy and Mike were married May 3rd, 1979 at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Sandy was born October 17th 1950 in Greenville Michigan. She is survived by her husband, Mike Coons; her mother, Millie Fisher; her brother, Dean Fisher; and sister, Diane Roose.
Sandy joined the United States Air Force in 1971 and retired in 1991 as a Tech Sergeant. She received the National Defense Medal with Bronze Oak-leaf, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Silver Oak-leaf and the Air Force Accommodation Medal during her 20 years, 2 months in the United States Air Force.
She served at multiple Air Force bases starting at Lackland Air Force Base for basic training. She was an Administration Specialist then changed careers and became an Operations Intelligence Specialist. Sandy was stationed at Keesler AFB Mississippi, Intelligence Tech school Colorado, Dover AFB Delaware, Kelly AFB Texas, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska and Misawa AFB Japan.
Sandy was an NRA Life and Heritage Member. Sandy was a Hunter/Safety instructor for the State of Alaska and recruited her then boyfriend then her Husband into teaching with her. Sandy loved fishing with Mike, going on hunting trips and exploring Alaska and all the places she was stationed at. After retirement from the Air Force, Sandy worked at the Palmer Senior Center, helping our local seniors for years. Sandy was Mike’s rock and behind the scenes strong supporter in his work in carrying on Conservative agendas with the Matsu Chapter of AMAC Action and then the Concerned Conservatives of Alaska.

Celebration of Life will be Saturday, February 11th at 1 pm at Real Life Church, 10697 E. Palmer-Wasilla Hwy, Palmer, AK with a dessert potluck to follow.
